UAE awarded the design of its opulent parliament building to a relatively small Los Angeles firm, Ehrlich Architects. The firm won the competition by outperforming Foster, Hadid and Fuksas. Bustler
i like the use of 10 pointed star. i have not seen one for a while. it results in nice tessellations and adds design density to other spaces otherwise detailed mundanely, like the main chamber.
i would also overpass the street on the sea side and extend the pedestrian plaza into the water. right now, the whole design kind of dead ends into the median strip of palm trees.
atrium inside is rather detailed like a hotel lobby which is a common typology in the region.
architecture-symbology aside, or not, this is a system of semi elected (and only by family members) of parliamentary monarch. UAE as series of corporate states is interesting. if you will, UAE is an employer state. it is really a business model, the result of british empire leaving series of satellite families or 'owners' in control of all the dealings of business with the world (oil, construction, tourism.)
its main population is foreign service workers and laborers.
this is partially and selectively open to public offered nation-corporation, and there is no replacement need for it in the foreseeable future. it will serve to corporate business investors since it is very existence is just that and worker management of the significant temporary populace consisting family members of the ruling class, suitcase ready expats, wealthy fantasy tourists and construction workers. protected by world's most advanced navies and air forces, UAE parliament is a stable regional board room to function until at least there is more petroleum to mine and contracts to sign.
right now, tahrir square in cairo where the 'real parliament' is located in the arab world.
_________
anybody have links to the other architects' proposals?
