Dai Haifei, 24, a newly graduated architect, decided to make his own egg-style home after being unable to afford Beijing's sky-high rental prices. The two-meter high house with two wheels underneath is made from sack bags on the outside wall, bamboo splints on the inside and wood chippings and grass seeds in between. "The seeds will grow in the natural environment and it's cold-proof," Dai explained.

I would love to see a whole urban district of these.. Or refugee camps maybe. Seems like a pretty cheap and renewable answer to at least temporary low cost housing.
I hope the guy gets an ivy league scholarship out of this. For a 24 yo straight out of a chinese school is this very impressive. Initiative is lacking in today's youth.
apparently this guy works for the firm that did this...............i dont know how i feel about this now. it's one thing to take inspiration from someones work but another to take a design from the firm you work at and call it your own, albeit with some modifications.
i don't think he's hiding that he works for standard-architecture. this project was written up in the design vanguard issue of archrecord, too.
i think it's a beautiful little object and - if it functions as advertised - a great urban 'furniture' solution. don't like thinking about the rats, though.

And I love that it's occupying a basically unused portion of the public right of way - a "planter" that probably usually only collects garbage.
Also, his book "shelf" detail is lovely.

I'd be afraid of rats moving in.
