The Italian Job

This proposal involves retrofitting part of the Olivetti factory in Ivrea, by Luigi Filini and Gino Polini. I proposed to take the two storey building beneath the car park at the rear of the site and introduce live-work units for 18 young creative persons by adding an extra floor to the building. The idea is that you park your car in the car park and enter the living quarters at that level. Below this is office or studio space accessed from the living areas and then on the ground floor there is a gym, communal canteen and bike store.

The building therefore has three layers - Live, Work & Play. Each layer in turn then has a different level of privacy. The living space is private, the offices are semi-private and the ground floor is public. The apartments are positioned so that the bedrooms face into the courtyard while the kitchen, stairs and bathroom face onto the car park. Each apartment houses three people. Each office is shared by two apartments, and the ground floor is shared by all, acting as a place of exchange for the new tenants as well as the factory workers across the courtyard.

A new path to the south of the building allows for public access into the courtyard by foot or bicycle to allow for use of the communal facilities or access via the public entrance to the studios.

I hope to foster an environment that encourages interaction between the different professions coming into contact with each other.
