A Semi-Private Workshop

Located in Borris, Co.Carlow the design objective was to create a temporary private workshop that could also become open to the community when required. It was decided that the location of the structure would be on the existing old wall of the Borris castle. It contained spaces that straddled the town side and the grounds of Borris woods near the castle which made it interesting.

Separating the public and the private realm was the main driving factor of this design. The workshop users may work alone on the ground floor away from the public and enjoy a tranquil view of the woods in front of them. Upstairs the space is separated into two workshops and there is a different experience in each. The first workshop overlooks the town while the other, again, enjoys a view of the woods.

While the building is essentially a workshop the public may still cross over from each side via the horizontal space that runs through the wall.  While they pass thought the space the craftsmen and artists may display their work along the floor which is naturally illuminated. The community is also encouraged to present goods for sale in an allocated space on the town side. The space is protected from rain as the upper level over hangs the stalls.

The structure is as much a private one as it is a public one. When the building is not rented to private workshops the town may convert the space to a relaxing reading space on the upper level looking both at the town and woods.
