A Neighborhood Revival

The task undertaken through this project was to investigate an underdeveloped site in Chapelizord, Co. Dublin and revitalise it through a new function and use.

An extensive research of Chapelizord began at the early stages of the project and included a SWOT analysis of the town. From the research I identified an opportunity site which was an empty space in a neighbourhood area, apparently being used as a dumping ground.

The brief that I set myself was to create small housing units that would attempt to ameliorate conditions that appeared to have a negative effect on the existing neighbourhood. The key to this was creating sociable spaces where neighbours would interact on a daily bases. Carefully designed spaces were intended for use throughout people’s life cycle.

The project included twenty four housing units that were accessed from a newly designed street becoming the centre axis of the design. Perpendicular streets to the main street were designed for secondary access and contained garden spaces with plenty sunlight which would look out onto the river Liffey. All of these streets and gardens were intended for human interaction to promote a pleasant neighbourhood scene. The project also contained a community facility to invite the broader public to the area.
