Project: Housing project in downtown Scranton, located at the corner of Linden Street and Wyoming Avenue.

     Adhering to the growing college and education population in the area, I wanted to establish an area to house students as well as providing them with a facility to be used as a flexible learning environment, that focused around the arts and humanities culture in Scranton. Basing the design off the word “bifurcate”, the more private aspects of the site branch off Wyoming and towards the back of the site. The ramps and changes in elevation split the building in two sections, a working and living environment. Within the break line lies an atrium and sculpture garden providing a a space between the housing and the art studios.

    The corner of the site, is occupied by a cafe and restaurant adhering to the the public aspect of the site. The break and path splitting the dining area and the housing is available for pedestrians to walk freely through and view the art and work from the students. The facade of the student housing consists of alternating glass and metal clad panels.The panels are placed strategically, to shield the entrances to each private housing unit, while the glass allows sunlight to pierce through the wall.

     Outside the building includes a depression in the site. This depression will be used to display the students work. This area also provides another entrance into the ground floor where the galleries and amphitheater are located. The housing is located on four floors and is available to art students in the surrounding area. This entirety of the site allows the students to be able to live and work without traveling to far. The surrounding area already includes places to eat, bars and other amenities that is all available within walking distance of the site, promoting a more pedestrian city.
