The 5x17 small housing

<KIA(Korean Institute of Architecture) AWARD Architecture of The Year 2014 Best 7>

“The 5x17 small housing” is located in Daecheong-ro which once was a place of cultural exchange, the main temporary capital. However, it has been through steady decline since the 1990s as the original city’s public facilities moved to new secondary cities, and large companies moved outside of the city or to other countries. These are the complicated and complex historical, cultural, economical, social aspects packed into the 5X17 small housing plot.

The house is a mixed-use building for a small space, only 376.7ft2 (16.4ft x 22.9ft), but exploits all potential possibilities of the small site. There were many problems (such as construction, parking spot, vertical circulation and etc.)came from the small area. In spite of these problems, “The 5x17 small housing” has functional and aesthetic design with its calm materials and precise details. This small building could be the spark to change the direction of the city’s structure, and its functional and exterior achievements could bring out changes to its disorganized, old surroundings environment.
