The Beechwood Stables complex consists of three buildings; a riding arena, a horse barn and a service barn. The arena is fronted by a tall porch with a monumental fireplace framed by granite and Douglas fir columns and a ridgeline skylight. The porch leads to an observation room overlooking the arena. Horizontally bi-folding “hangar” doors along the arena’s perimeter provide extraordinary light, views and ventilation. An enclosed link between the arena and stall barn accommodates space for a farrier’s visit. The service barn is the public face of the complex and fronts the surrounding suburban neighborhood. The exterior walls are built of massive local stones with rough ashlar corner blocks. The lower level provides storage for trailers and tow vehicles. The main level is used primary for entertaining and office space. Beechwood Stables is a study in stone, timber and metal. The project design uses traditional agricultural building materials and details in combination with contemporary techniques and program requirements. The three buildings surround a cobblestone courtyard bordered to the east by an outdoor riding ring.
