The Cable Mills River Houses are a series of 7 Duplexes (14 units) along a scenic river’s edge in Williamstown, MA. This is a rare opportunity for our office to work on rural housing at a mid-density scale. The site has encouraged us to explore a contemporary interpretation of the Berkshire farmhouse. The current design is exploring a formal shift and carving technique along the gable at the second floor axis to provide elevated outdoor space and lower level courtyards. This duplex type will alternate with the more symmetrical gabled profile type along the river’s edge making legible the transformation of the platonic precedent.
