Positioned on a small corner lot at a busy intersection in the heart of Boston’s lower east side, the Variable Commitment House combines sustainability, privacy, and community within a contemporary composition. A synthesis of a mid-rise and courtyard housing typologies, it’s form is intended to maximize natural sunlight and interior space, providing variable unit types to emerge above street level, while off-street parking and commercial space occupy the ground level. Strong visual connections within the design enables a physical but unspoken dialogue with public, while offering a slightly removed space for the residents. A greater sense of community is enriched within the project through various common spaces on both the interior and exterior
