Lake 33rd, Bronzeville is an project part of the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial, on display in the Chicago Cultural Center from 9/16/2017 to 1/07/2018 in the Chicago Cultural Center. The final project was a 30' x 24' site model describing our proposal.
Our proposal seeks to promote greater connectivity between IIT, the Bronzeville community, and Lake Michigan. Our proposal is a series of new buildings dotted throughout the campus and the Bronzeville neighborhood on existing vacant lots. These buildings function both conceptually and literally as mountains, providing views to the lake and each other on an otherwise flat terrain. They contain both academic programs for students (classrooms, studios, etc) and community programs for neighborhood residents (library, museum, swimming pool, etc). In addition to the mountains, which help direct movement towards the lake, 33rd street has been re-imagined as a pedestrian greenway to give direct lake access to both students and residents.
