This public housing duplex was designed as a prototype that would be first built in the remote hamlet of Aklavik, NT. NRCan will be using this prototype to assist in a best-practice guide for builders. Aklavik sits on a sand bed along the Mackenzie Delta & is only accessible by air. As such, this duplex was designed to sit on a triodetic foundation due to unstable ground conditions. Facilities are also trucked-in so a shared mechanical & water/waste storage is required in this design. A double wall assembly will be implemented for a highly insulated exterior.
