Kitikmeot Inuit Association (KIA) Office Building [22M]

Winter & summer sun angles vary greatly in Cambridge Bay making natural light a significant element in arctic design. The role of the atrium & the placement of the offices are paramount to this design strategy for the KIA office building. The atrium’s southern-facing windows bring light into the circulation space creating a public gathering space with seating between the main & second floors. On the exterior, the atrium is painted black to soak up as much of the sun’s rays as possible. Core services sit in the centre of the building to allow maximum day lighting for every office. A skylight is utilized to direct light deep into the entry way of the conference room. This project won a design & technical excellence award at Stantec.
