Atuarfik narsarsuaq - New School in Nuuk

KHR has won the competition of building a new school in the centre of Nuuk city. The location on the edge of the large plateau gives a unique opportunity to create a school that is an integrated part of the city on one hand and maintains a strong connection to the surrounding landscape on the other.

The architecture is inspired by the impressive Greenlandic nature. The roofs appear as a silhouette against the sky, like the contours of the surrounding mountains on the horizon. Moreover, these sculptural roof-shapes create an inner double-height spaciousness in each school building, with skylights bringing light in from above.

The centrally located assembly hall constitutes the heart of the school. It is placed at the main entrance and ties all the functions of the school together. From this double-high room with its soft, natural light that is drawn in through the skylights, one overlooks the entrance hall and further on to the fjord in the background. In the other direction, students and teachers can look out to the distant mountains, that rise over the horizon - a majestic view that constantly incorporates Greenland's beautiful and powerful nature into the everyday at the school.
