CTBUH 2014: Kitotkara

Location: New Delhi, India
Status: Competition entry
Date: September, 2014 - October 2014

Mumbai is the largest city in India and the fastest growing city in the Indian subcontinent. With a population of about 12 million people, the feasibility of new construction has become zero. The city has expanded to the east till the slopes of the western ghat mountains. The ground slopes more than 45 degrees in these parts making conventional construction impossible. The unique Indian system of pathshala involves the daily interaction among members of the extreme ends of living generations. D
I propose a system of synergized living. Kitotkara aims to reduce social barriers that exist in families and between neighbors  to further interaction in a safe and self sustained environment. It serves residential units, retirement living and education zones.

The defining feature in the building is the presence of green spaces knit into the fabric of housing units. These spaces serve as venues for homegrown businesses. Cooler temperatures are maintained by shafts carrying windward updrafts. Kitotkara imitates curves of the slopes hosting the building to create an organic fabric form. Curved columns hold levels against the slope of the mountain.
Unique configuration of the mountains allow a constant upward flow of air throughout the year. The energy generation along with the rain which falls on the windward side of the mountain makes the entire structure self sustained. The residences and educational spaces are ventilated by updrafts of air flowing underground along the height of the high rise.
