Gowanus Housing Complex

The Gowanus Canal located in Brooklyn New York is a postindustrial site that has become an urban void between two residential neighborhoods Carol Gardens and Park Slope. The negation that has derived from this location is an uncommon occurrence in NY and has opened up opportunity for new events, like concerts, block parties, artisan studios, and canoeing. Amongst these unlikely scenarios this housing complex connects the two neighborhoods by rising above the bleak horizontal datum of the warehouses. This acts as a lantern and its grandeur invites the people to explore its new way of inhabiting a postindustrial site.

This urban gesture also connects the people with the canal by raising the housing off of the ground and opens the space below to create a boardwalk. An elevated park is also made accessible for the residents of the housing complex. The advantages of having the housing raised vary from protection against the flood zone to the opening of free program space below allowing for markets and leisure. All in all, this project is made to engage the people with their surroundings and allows them to get enjoyment out of the postindustrial landscape while connecting the void between two residential neighborhoods.
