We are seeking a Model Shop Assistant to work closely with the Model Shop Manager in the day-to-day operations of BIG’s model shop. Responsibilities include all aspects of shop upkeep, including but not limited to facility organization, maintaining an overview of all materials & supplies, equipment maintenance, and facility improvements. The Shop Assistant will train and mentor BIGsters in the proper use of our fabrication facilities and equipment, serving as a primary point of contact for technical assistance. Additionally, the Shop Assistant will work with our Archivist to assist in model packaging for storage.

In general, your responsibilities will include though may not be limited to:

  • Lead facilities cleanliness and organization to maintain a clean and safe working environment
  • Perform routine maintenance of all shop tools including laser cutters, 3d printers, spray booth, shop utility systems, wood working machinery, and fabrication aids
  • Maintain an overview of all equipment service contracts and coordination for service visits
  • Assist with all shop related material inventory, ordering and organization
  • Assist in shop improvements including but not limited to space organization, signage and guide creation, protocol development and implementation
  • Train and mentor others in the proper use of the shop facilities and equipment
  • Ensure shop users adhere to shop protocol and safety procedures
  • Assist the Archivist in model packaging

We seek a person who:

  • Is organized, structured and both big-picture-savvy and detail-oriented
  • Is capable of multi-tasking (often varying in scale and scope)
  • Can demonstrate an enthusiasm for creative problem solving
  • Has self-confidence and persistence, and is confident with decision making
  • Can demonstrate an attention to detail, and an appreciation for quality
  • Is proactive and who also completes tasks with a sense of urgency
  • Has excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Feels that no administrative task is too little
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm for expanding knowledge and a drive to constantly improve
  • Has proficiency in Rhino and relevant 3d printing, laser cutting, CNC milling software
  • Has strong digital and traditional fabrication skills including woodworking
  • Has prior experience as an assistant or technician in a model shop, fab lab or similar maker space preferred
  • Knowledge of adhesives, fasteners, paints, finishes, model making/building materials, etc. preferred
  • Knowledge of architectural model making preferred

This is a full time, salaried role anticipated to be fully in person in our office located in Brooklyn, NY.
