About Homestead

Homestead (YCombinator W20) is a start-up focused on turning underutilized space into new housing. We have one goal: help solve America's housing crisis. Homestead's development platform uses technology to bring design, financing, permitting, and construction management into a seamless experience for homeowners.

Recent legislation (California's ADU laws & SB 9) makes it easier for Homeowners to develop new housing on their own property. The problem is that the average homeowner is not prepared to manage (or finance) such a big undertaking. Homestead makes adding an ADU (see some examples here) or building a second unit as easy as saying "Yes".

With the passage of SB 9, Homestead will help homeowners split their lot, secure financing, permit, design, & build entirely new homes in their backyard. Homeowners have the option to put down $0 and split the profit with Homestead on the sale of the new property — making $300k-$1m without spending a dollar.

TechCrunch named Homestead one of the top 20 YC companies in 2020. We're backed by top-tier investors who originally funded Airbnb, Netflix, & Doordash. We are a group of pragmatic idealists, and we're looking for high-energy team members with a strong belief in social justice, affordable housing, and fair living for all.

Role

The position is for an ambitious, versatile designer, capable of working collaboratively across a diverse range of projects and processes. You will be an integral part of Homestead's Design Team, responsible for shaping our architectural products and coordinating their delivery.

An ideal candidate is capable of working iteratively and thinking systematically through challenging design problems, coordinating multiple projects simultaneously, and building systems to continually improve our processes. You will be joining a motivated, interdisciplinary team working together to add more affordable housing to our communities.

What you’ll do

Design Documentation

  • Create project documentation sets in Revit for ground-up housing projects utilizing Homestead’s design systems and documentation standards.
  • Engage directly with Homeowners, conducting documentation review meetings to finalize details and ensure design quality.
  • Coordinate structural engineers, mechanical engineers, Title 24 consultants, and solar providers to create comprehensive permit and construction drawing sets

Product Development

  • Work closely with the Design Team leadership to develop new single-family and duplex architectural products.
  • Create diagrams, design studies, presentation drawings and renderings to support the development and communication of new product offerings
  • Develop the interior and exterior finish and landscape packages by researching materials, communicating with suppliers and manufacturers, updating our procurement databases, and creating a simple system for Homeowners to make decisions.

Special Interests

At Homestead, all Design Team members are exposed to the full design process. However, we encourage team members to bring their interests and take ownership over portions of our work.

  • Sustainable Construction - Research low-carbon building materials and develop high performance construction details suitable for California’s climate. Coordinate strategies across suppliers and manufacturers, procurement databases and construction teams.
  • BIM Integration - Build-out and maintain Revit standards, libraries, and details for streamlined use across all projects. Identify, vet and integrate new digital tools into Homestead design and delivery systems to enable implementation at a scale that allows more people to access high quality design.
  • Zoning, Code & Policy - Understand and interpret multiple city’s rules and regulations to create design solutions that are applicable throughout California and ensure streamlined permitting processes.

Requirements

  • BArch or MArch degree.
  • 2 - 4 years professional experience.
  • Experience in residential architecture and construction an asset, but not required.
  • Experience in Revit is required, expertise is an asset. Experience with Dynamo is a bonus. You will be required to work in Revit and we will support your learning and skill development.
  • High degree of proficiency in Rhino.
  • High degree of proficiency in Photoshop and rendering software is preferred.
  • Excellent social & communication skills. You should feel comfortable succinctly sharing ideas, questions, feedback, and critical information with the Design Team.
  • Ability to quickly learn new tools.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret zoning ordinances, building code, and state legislation to ensure the compliance and viability of a project

Benefits

  • Platinum PPO Health Insurance, Dental, and Vision included for all employees.
  • All full-time employees own equity in the company.
  • Flex office schedule — choose which days to WFH and which you to come into our Los Angeles offices.
  • Provided Company Computer.
  • Engage your unique professional background skills to add affordable housing in California.
  • Design iteratively, learning from each process, and see projects built within months
  • Work alongside the Sales, Design, and Project & Construction Management teams who all have diverse academic and professional backgrounds.
  • Be a part of a start-up, working at the intersection of architecture, technology and finance to make home ownership accessible to more people.
