The Transient City Project

In Bend, Oregon, the transient population is increasing at a significantly more rapid pace than the permanent residences. Before long the annual visitors will outnumer the people who move to the city each year. Bend depends so heavily on its tourism industry and transient business population that without them an economic collapse would be inevitable.

Bend's unique situation means that the population is in constant flux. The Transient City Project addresses this phenomenon by creating architecture that caters to the idea of a temporary population. The project is a new form of building which used flexible, prefabricated, mobile modules, each functioning as multiple spaces, the state of which depends on its occupancy at any given time Within these units each occupant is able to customize to suit their needs and create their own personal version of a temporary home, while not leaving any space unused. These units create a kit of generic yet adaptable units which can be rearranged in different patterns to cater to the larger context.
