The OregonBILDS Design/Build project is a 1,280 sq ft affordable housing unity design and built by a group of University of Oregon architecture students in conjunction with faculty and local contractors. The project strives towards excellence in sustainability and the production of high quality spaces at a low cost. Working on the OregonBILDS project provided the unique opportunity to deal with various real life issues involved in completing a project in an academic setting. Students were required to work as a team to tackle issues such as design, budget, code requirements, HVAC, plumbing and electrical plans, construction and enclosures details, structural requirements, material selection, and the creation of a complete permit set.
The driving force in the design of the first ever OregonBILDS house was to create a beautiful, comfortable, and efficient family home, while maintaining a low cost for both the construction and occupancy. Considerations were made to maximize usable space, create ample storage, take advantage of the possibility for daylit spaces, and connect to the site seamlessly.
