Surrounding Rome are a ring of forts built during World War II, which have been left largely unused since their construction. The municipality of Rome is investigating ways in which these forts can be retrofitted to create new spaces of activity and interest. The site for this project is the Forte Bravetta, situated to the southwest of Rome's city center, on the edge of a largely residential area, which currently has no urban core to speak of.
One of the most exciting things about Italy are the public markets. Similr to a farmer's market, Italys markets sell everything from fresh produce to clothing. These informal public markets of pop-up stands seemingly disappear just as soon as they arrive. This ephemeral quality is what lead to the concept of creating a more permnent local market in the reuse of Forte Bravetta, creating a new cetner for the neighborhood where people can shop, eat, and be entertained all in once place.
The new urban center at the Forte Bravetta can be programatically divided into three distinct parts: the Market Hall (housing small, permanent stalls), the Market Place (reuse and expansion of the existing barracks to create retail and small business spaces), and the Piazzza (to host temporary markets, performances, festivals, and other events, as well as provide spill-out space for the surrounding businesses).
