Architect's Office

The identity of the city of Mataró is linked forever to the textile industry.

In one corner of the city an old factory becomes a workspace. The same space that housed an industry and later a home is the starting point of this project. As a logical cycle in time: work - live - work.

The same space with different contents. The idea of returning to retrieve the industrial past that slowly fades. From one day to the other factories are erased at a stroke the center of town, to make way for housing. Leaving fireplaces and unique legacy, as if the rest does not matter.

The property was found almost completely concealed what was there before. Partitions, necessary to form the house made of the facade holes were required to close. False ceilings do not let the generous height of the place, nor their vaults ...

Go scratching the walls, the floors. Go pulling partitions and suspended ceilings to rediscover that workspace of the past. Then the materials, stone walls, wrought iron pillars and beams, brick vaults of guyed. Even the original soil reappears in several overlapping layers of pavement, about 50 cm of existing housing.

Reopen the holes in the walls to make way for the light, generating new access to the study through a courtyard garage that gets to street level, mimicking the pavement. Maclar the present city with its industrial past.

Put a structure within another structure. The wall separating the interior courtyard garage widens to collect wetlands. The mezzanine and meeting area is arranged according to the facade, where the windows are moved upwards.

Imagining that there was also something in his time on that site.

New materials are chosen in relation to the old, also the elements that organize the architectural elements are arranged enhancing the factory. Returning them the importance they deserve. Work zones are arranged in relation to the full and empty facade. Tiles are removed around the perimeter of the original ground to make way for the facilities and then cover with concrete, trying to respect, maintain, restore the original state.

The city remembers its industrial past, at least in this corner.
