The city of Darmstadt sold plots of land for detached houses to different families - each with their own architect - in order to get a 'diverse' and colorful neighborhood. 

i_d a's approach was to form a gap in the row of houses - in which there is a differentiation in the facade as well as funtional separation inside. This gap incorporates the areas for vertical and horizontal movement - thus stairs, bridges and halls.
