Tokyo Pop Lab

This competition entry was done for a museum of Pop Culture in Tokyo. Our aim was to create a space where their visitors could study Japanese art, and observe the production, philosophy, history, and the beauty of their art.

There is a gallery showcasing the studios of housed local artists that represent the philosophies, and future visions of Japanese contemporary art and pop culture. Additionally, there is a circular display case below that displays their finished projects.

By showcasing the art at ground level, visitors can feel a sense of admiration towards the work while walking across the landscaped art garden/plaza running through and around the building. This mirrors the interior of the other building on the site where visitors can view the multi-media works created over Japan's history and experience their place in time.

In the center of the main workshop building there is a mechanically operated cinema that shifts to created a covered dome. This is where videos, holograms, and other digital art is displayed. The outdoor cinema is easily accessible at ground level. This creates a fundamental correlations between cultural production and architecture.
