Accessed through a landscaped courtyard via a public highway, the pair will form a unique contemporary end focus to an otherwise traditional landscape.
The site for these houses is bordered on two sides by listed buildings of both commercial and residential use.
From the outset a main consideration was to limit the impact of any potential development on the historic surrounding character, so careful consideration was placed on the positioning and massing of the proposed. The new house pairing sits back from the face of the adjacent Victorian cottages, reflecting their rhythm, with roof pitches and heights mirroring the outline of the neighbouring cottage. The facade treatment has a modern approach, whilst still drawing reference from the existing historic location.
Due to the existing site constraints and face-to-face distances of the existing and proposed window locations, the plan layout has been configured so that all habitable rooms are located to the rear of the site, south facing and maximising views through to the gardens. Only the triple height entrance core, light well and circulation spaces overlook the front courtyard, with adjacent bathrooms benefitting from borrowed light.
