AMP Studios Pavilion

The pavilion was conceived as a coherent structure that would echo and complement the urban setting between the railway line and busy road.

Its form was driven by the geometry of the existing Victorian masonry railway viaduct, extending the usable sheltered area from a pair of arches out onto the forecourt.

The expressive geometry, produced with engineers Foster Structures, is structurally efficient using a simple series of modular elements and nodal connections. The large span of each arch is broken down into sets of smaller, lighter components which were fabricated off-site then assembled by hand on-site. This helped to manage the budget restrictions by using widely-available materials and reduce build-time and disruption to the resident artists who occupy the other arches.

The raw palette of structural timber, galvanised steel and polycarbonate presents a clean palette for those using the space for weddings, parties and other events. The criss-cross support legs are integrated with timber planters, providing sufficient weight to anchor the pavilion. Over time, plants will cover the structure to create an inner city oasis; an extraordinary London location.
