Kulturhus

Fall 2011

Designed during a semester abroad in Copenhagen, Denmark, Kulturhus is a cultural center, combining in one building a theater, media center, restaurant, flexible multipurpose space, and subway station. Kulturhus combines  these varied functions into one form. Like a block of ice that falls and breaks into related but separate forms, Kulturhus is a solid volume cut by the proposed metro line and separated out. This resulting crevice separates functions and creates a covered plaza, which connects commercial Frederiksberg Alle to the adjacent residential outdoor area. The two monolithic volumes also take on the translucent appearance of ice with a double facade of stippled glass, which obscures yet hints at activities within the building. This double facade also brings light into subterranean spaces.
