NAJRAN COMMUNITY PLAN – PHASE I - NAJRAN, KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA

NAJRAN COMMUNITY PLAN – PHASE I

The Master Plan is located at the very heart of the Najran Development directly across the Airport terminal and consists of a vibrant Mixed-Use Town Center including Retail, Restaurants, Resi¬dential, Hotel, Office and a Mosque. The Plan brings together the natural context of the Najran Valley and its most beautiful feature the Wadi with the character of the traditional Town of Najran, with their vertical buildings that rise above the Natural Environment.
We reinterpreted the Wadi element as a major Central Park around which are organized the buildings that make up the Town Center. We employed modern materials and construction methods and a modern planning approach to marry the traditional with the most current mixed use Town Center development layouts as follows.
All functions are organized around a Radial Fan-Shaped plan. The Centerpiece of Phase 1 is the Retail Market at the Ground floor. The Radial Plan Geometry of the Market embraces a Major Central Park that provides relief to the Resident as well as a Civic Space: a venue for cultural, commercial and leisure activities.
The Major Buildings of Phase One are organized either to frame The Market and the Central Park, or point to the central public space.
Each one of the functional elements are engaged with a Curved Walk that ties the entire Phase 1 to¬gether. The Curved Walk refers to the old historic trade Routes in the area. The functionally distinct build¬ings are connected to this walk like a string of pearls.
