King Abdullah Financial District Mosque Design

On a tight urban site, the mosque is contemporary, with a subtle sloping cubic form, with metal patterned grilles reflecting traditional Islamic forms shading the expanses of glass, that connect the interior to the exterior. The design reflects the simplicity of Islam, and the inward search for peace, through contemplation and prayer. The reflecting pool reinforces the Islamic concept, of the sacred qualities to water as a life-giving, sustaining, and purifying resource. The entire building is clad in Riyadh sandstone, a native material, while the pool on which the mosque rests is lined with polished grey and red marble. The focal point of the 50-foot square prayer room is the mihrab, aligned with Mecca, and clad in traditional Islamic tile.
