Magic Leap Headquarters

Magic Leap is one of the most innovative technology companies in the world, known for a radical approach to computing and virtual reality. For its headquarters, Magic Leap took over an existing commercial building with 259,000 square feet of space that had to include an array of programmatic functions for the company’s 1,000+ employees: open work areas and support spaces, research and development labs, manufacturing facilities, and more. For Glavovic Studio, the fundamental challenge was creating a workplace that would reflect and inspire the revolutionary nature of the work being done there.

Glavovic Studio defined the project in urban terms given the sheer size of the space and the disparate program elements that had to be accommodated. The firm developed a pattern of linked neighborhoods, where interaction occurs in the streets and nodes. An interconnected non-linear geometry fosters and supports a strong creative culture at Magic Leap and is achieved with a spiral-shaped plan.

The floor plate is modulated by an invented topography. The ceilings are exposed and, in most enclosed spaces, vary in height depending on usage. On the second floor, nearly a quarter of the floor is raised to disrupt any sense of spatial uniformity and to reinforce functional uses relating to the technical program requirements. The structural material palette of the existing building is used to create a simple rhythm and grid. The concrete floors are polished and stained, and steel columns and joists are made grey with intumescent paint.

Although the client did not seek green certification, Glavovic Studio pursued many sustainable approaches with Magic Leap’s support. The firm specified primarily LED fixtures, harvested daylight and an interior shade system to conserve energy. Lighting systems include automatic shutoff with vacancy sensors in all enclosed spaces. The result is a project that is 13% under the energy code allowance for lighting power density. In the material and fixtures selection, Glavovic Studio utilized multiple strategies to achieve sustainability. All materials had no VOC or low VOC content.

Glavovic Studio designed the Magic Leap headquarters to represent the spirit and energy of their cutting-edge technology, while fostering collaboration and idea sharing. The nationwide headquarters generate excitement and convey the innovative spirit of technology to visitors and staff.
