Contemporary Apartment @ Raheja, Viveria

As an Architect it was a challenge for us to design this 1800 sq.ft. apartment which is considered to be in one of Mumbai’s prime property standing tall facing the Mahalaxmi Race course. This apartment comprises of three spacious bedrooms , study room, kitchen and a linear passage which takes you to the Living and Dining area. While designing this house a lot of process has been involved to create a perfect space for the people dwelling in it. We as designers have not only paid attention on the functionality of the space but also emphasized on lot of details in terms of materials and forms. Throughout the house you see a transition between different spaces. This predominantly contemporary house exudes richness through its colours, styling, detailing and designing. The house oozes a material pallet of wood, stones, cement sheet, etc and hues of grey, white, blue, beige, green & yellow.

Passage :

As one enters the house you see an entire floor finished in one toned Italian marble named Danish Beige. We have divided the linear passage in zones like entrance waiting area, shoe rack area and an entry to parents bedroom on the right wall. The left wall shows a panel finished in white pu paint with series of square embossed pattern. This pattern not only adds a design element to the passage but also cleverly hides the entry to the study room & the powder room. The wooden ribbed pattern ceiling blends very well with the white embossed panel. An air conditioning Service door is flushed within these ribbed panel. The grey texture paint enhances the veneer and the white PU which further continuous in the Living and the Dining area. We have broken the norms of designing a typical looking shoe rack by  giving it an innovative design form .It is designed in such a way that it creates a illusion showing a block of grey stone  passing through n through from the two louvered storage boxes which further juts out forming a niche on the other side…the  entire shoe box is given a floating effect..we had picked a sculpture which is apt to be kept on this piece of furniture… this is a sculpture of a athlete which is above to pounce from the height..The Veneer panel at the back of the shoe rack adds warmth to the entrance. The passage further takes you to a stunning mural created by using series of chrome finished Horse faces. The circular niche holds the mural which creates element of newness & curiosity.

Living & Dining Area :

The passage leads you to the Living and Dining area. One admires the two vertical huge panels finished in leather effect dark brown Italian marble in the living area. These panels become the most significant design element in the living room which holds an interesting piece of art. We have put in a thoughtful thinking while picking up these pair of cycle paintings. The dark beige coloured sofa stands out well in front of the two vertical panels. The contrast tan coloured lounge chairs on both side of the long sofa compliments well with the over all decor. The grey coloured centre table was purposefully kept minimal to enhance other loose furniture in the living area. The TV Panel shows a simple, symmetrical & straight lined design. This panel is finished in peach coloured rustic Spanish tile.  The ceiling which continues in the living and the dining area is kept bare minimal with simple form and clean lines to highlight other elements in this area. The left side wall of the dining area shows a floating Dinette unit finished in grey Italian marble on the border with the drawers finished in white and black corean. The design of the wall holding the Dinette unit is kept soft and contemporary with use of grey textured paint showing empty frames finished in same colours to create novel & unusual look. The off-centred box finished in white corona border and veneer shutter holds the mandir inside it. This box completes the design of this wall. The right wall of the Dining area shows a huge wooden frame holding series of mirror panels having chamfered edges. This panel gives depth to the dining area and enhances the beauty of the dining area by reflecting the contemporary looking Dining Table & the pair of hanging lights. The antique clock on the mirror panel with Roman numbers breaks the monotony of modern theme. Artifacts in the living room were carefully hand-picked to add a splash of blue colour to the entire decor of Living & Dining area.

Master Bedroom :

The Master Bedroom is drenched in a pallet of Brown, white & beige colour theme. The mixed -  matched Crotch veneer used in this bedroom gives a warm welcoming feel. The toilet door which is at the entry of this bedroom is flushed in a veneer panel which further forms the border of the wardrobe shutters. One can see horizontal stripe pattern of alternate veneer & mirror both on the toilet door and on the wardrobe shutters. The mirror stripes on the wardrobe shutter reflects the bed area thus effectively enlarges the depth of the space. The bed backing is given an off - centred look with Veneer border and a plush cushioned backrest holding a gorgeous horse painting. Both the window frames of this bedroom are clad with Spider grey Italian marble which compliments very well with the crotch veneer. The plasma wall is accentuated with a rough stone finished tile. The corean ledge which holds the three black & white off - centred paintings above the tile panel completes the design of the plasma wall. The Master bedroom is continued with a balcony overlooking the stunning Mahalaxmi racecourse view.

Kids Bedroom :

We had chosen a gender neutral palette of grey, yellow & black for the Kids Bedroom. The sunshine colour flows through out the space which makes the room look bright and fresh. In purpose of making the narrow passage look wider we have used a huge mirror panel on the passage wall which reflects an art work made in a perspective form. We have used a bunk bed to make this room spacious & clutter free for the kids to enjoy their play area. The bed with its trendy and cool look compliments well with the decor of this bedroom. This being a kids bedroom we have used an unusual pattern of louvered shutters for the wardrobe. The yellow back painted shutter with a white pu border gels well with the louvered shutters. The laughing human paintings next to the wardrobe brings alive the naughty child in every person. The vertical brick patterned cement sheet behind the buck bed continues on the ceiling above the bed. This is flanked with two yellow and black bands on the sides which runs down their length from the bedback to the ceiling till the sides of both the windows. The funky accessories, Hanging lights , perspective wall art and flying birds gives this room a uber - cool look .

Parents Bedroom :

The Parents of this house wanted a space devoid of colours so we kept their bedroom straight - lined and simple. One sees use of cracked fumed oak veneer with combination of white colour in form of back painted glass & corean. The wardrobe shutters are kept in a linear & subtle form with use of white back painted square glasses with chamfered edges. The square glasses are highlighted by a thin veneer border around them. The bed backing has been given a symmetrical & minimal look. We have used two vertical panels of veneer which stands full height and further continues on the ceiling thus making the bed backing look bigger than its size. The white coloured hanging light in front of each vertical veneer panel compliments well with the overall decor and gives the parents bedroom a style statement. The huge mirror panels used on the bed backing wall not only reflects the smartly designed plasma unit but also give the room larger than its size illusion. The Plasma unit is clad in white corean having embossed geometrical pattern on it. The design shows vertical grooves which forms the handle to the toilet door which is flushed within the corona panel.

Kitchen :

As kitchen is considered to be one of the most important area of the house it needed to be aesthetically good yet functionally correct. We have used two parallel platforms finished in Brazilian Green granite. The internal orientation of the kitchen systematically holds all kitchen appliances and equipment, making the space look clutter free. A fresh look was adapted through out the kitchen by using vibrant green colour along with white. Thus the kitchen is made maintenance free, clean and bright with use of contemporary back painted glass shutters that compliments well with the kitchen dado and the platform.

Study Room :

We have made this room soothing and motivating by using more of white colour along with subtle veneer. A vibrancy was added with a splash of colour in form of aqua blue back painted glass shutters, green study chairs and a sporty red coloured study lamp. The ceiling has been highlighted with a flex showing kids favorite comic characters thus having an intention of capturing children's imagination.
