Advanced rendering post-production techniques

ElGrecus

I use Maxwell and am getting good results. I'd like to know what post-production techniques others use for elevating the quality of their renderings to make them more alive. I've been enjoying the recent renderings from OMA and BIG et al. produced by the French firms Labtop and Lexigon. It's not a style of rendering I would normally do for myself, but I'd like some insight into the techniques they are using. Particularly in the quality of light, glow, ambiance. Those are the hardest things to nail in a rendering.

Some of my favorite tricks:

a) copy the sky image; move the layer to the foreground and use "multiply" in PSD. Produces a naturalistic lighting effect.

b) take hi-res textures (dirty concrete or stucco), again, place in foreground and multiply. Tinker with adjustment layers in PSD.

Things I hate in renderings:

a) flocks of birds in the bkg (enough already)

b) renderings populated with supermodels

Your tricks?

i use vray, but these are some things i've been trying lately... getting interesting results... some similar to the luxigon stuff though I havn't quite mastered the sunset red/gold glow yet.
-copying the main subjects of the rendering and using diffuse glow at a lowered transparency on it... then deleting selectively to create a better ambiance.
-lens flare (yes i know... everyone says don't do it...) in the background if the image is facing south or west to give impression picture is being taken looking into the sun... emphasize with white gradient to give light depth of field
-depth of field settings...

I believe photoshop is key to get the "atmospheric" part of the image. Rendering provides the backbone for that. In one of the earlier issues of the magazine Mark, there was quite an interesting interview with the guy who does renders for Herzog de Meuron - with nice examples of what is rendered and what is photoshopped. However, I cannot recall his name...
