Housing scheme case study -- 1/2 hr film

SDR

Found this recently on John Hill's "Archidose."

Good news is always pleasant -- and encouraging -- isn't it ?

Is there anything here that wouldn't apply to North American housing construction issues -- other than our obsession with stand-alone houses ?

The fact that the whole thing is one big cul-de-sac is a bit troubling, maybe. . .

Off the top of my head? fire egress.

That's typically what kills many isolated housing projects (meaning the property is no adjacent to a right of way.) In fact, housing courts are almost entirely illegal in the US.

Cul-de-sacs aren't bad if you allow for direct transportation between them even if it is a walled path along a property line!

I'm quite fond of it. This is actually a pretty common historic housing type for the UK.

Don't you wish Americans would be able to be satisfied with such no-nonsense architecture ? Aren't you a little surprised that all that traditional brickwork was able to be afforded -- for a scheme including some low-income housing, on what was apparently an expensive piece of land ?
