Cultivating a relationship with a mentor (or mentors) is beneficial in all aspects of professional development, as is the obverse: taking time to lend an ear to a junior colleague, and offer lessons born of experience.
1. work variety, being exposed to all aspects of a project from schematics to completion, dealing with clients, consultants, and contractors at all phases.
2. a firm that offers the exposure mentioned above, on a variety of different projects: residential, multifamily, mixed-use, commercial, medical, industrial, whatever - variety is important.
3. good work environment, decent hours, good people, short commute, good $, opportunity to take on more responsibility and grow with your knowledge base.
