Columbia-The Shape of Two Cities!

Slev

Hi everyone! Well I am about to graduate with a bfa in graphic design. I plan on going through the application process for M.arch I admissions in the fall of 2011.

In the mean time I would really like to fill it with something that will be beneficial to the applications-as well something I am heavily interested in obviously. A while back I saw Columbia's web-site and the 'shape of two cities' program. This sounds like a perfect program. Unfortunately I cannot find anything that is current for the program. all I see is stuff for 2007.

Would anyone know if this program is still going on? If so could someone send me a link for it?

If anyone has taken the course how beneficial did you find it? Any thoughts?

All is appreciated thanks!

The New York/Paris Shape of Two cities program is still going strong. Recent work may not be included on the website because Columbia just launched this new website last year and some things haven't made it up there yet.

hey sam,

i havent't attended. i did the summer intro to architecture program in summer of 2009, and i just got into columbia for the m.arch program. i have a friend that did the program in 2008 and really enjoyed it. she is now in the m.arch program also. the program is rigorous and simulates the studio and academic environment at GSAPP. i imagine its like condensing a year of studio with a little study abroad. a good opportunity to meet people at GSAPP, get a sense of their style, and get some fodder for your portfolio.

i think, and i'm not certain here, that a guy named thomas de monchaux, heads the program. he teaches at berkeley and GSAPP. either him, or danielle smoller.

Hey WgaVinrobb - Thanks for the response. I am really interested in taking this program and I'm hoping you could supply some more information and possibly answer some questions I have about the program. Would it be possible to get your e-mail? If your no comfortable with that we could obviously just do it over this discussion.

I've always been curious... why two cities? and why always NY and Paris? NY and Paris aren't even really that comparable. NY and London would make more sense (the two commercial capitals of two complex globe-spanning empires at two different points in history). NY and Moscow? NY and Shanghai? NY and Mumbai? Or maybe NY and Rome, entitled New York's Present and Future? NY and Paris is kinda like NY and Boston.

i'm interested in applying to this program as a study abroad in my junior year of my undergraduate studies. would anyone know if i would gain more from the program as an undergraduate majoring in architecture with basic studio experience or post undergraduate studies?
