I was just accepted to the M Arch I program at Yale and am almost positive that I'll be going next year.
I am curious as to housing options for grad students. Do people opt for University housing? Or do they find their own apartments? And, if the latter, where are good neighborhoods to look? Also, whats the cost of an average studio/1 bedroom?
Most students live around the A&A...excuse me Rudolph Hall, on either Chapel, Park, or Howe....that's the area if you want the short walk.
Wooster Street, Wooster Square is a nice area, a bit further but you can take the Yale shuttle door to door after 6pm.
You should email Maria or Marylin to see if they can forward your housing search request on to the current students, that way you may find roommates or a third year who will not be renewing their lease.
Have fun and enjoy every resource imaginable at your fingertips.
i visited a bunch of places via chelsea company (who own 80 howe and others close by)... they are all fine: simple, one bedroom for bed only, with a living/dining room. i pushed my luck and looked for a place closer to the school of architecture, and found one on the same block for the same price as chelsea company.
i haven't moved in yet, so maybe there are perks of the howe street apts that i couldn't see in one visit... like being closer to a community of friends...
i knew i didn't want to wait for a shuttle to go to grad housing at 3 o'clock in the morning or walk since it's far and i am a girl. also, moving out every summer since this summer and next summer will be spent in new haven (for courses/building) did not seem conducive.
for me, living "off campus" and as close as possible to the school were my priorities. but, i'll definitely post back again if my future-self disagrees.
Elm Campus Partners is a good place to look. They manage Yale-owned buildings for student apartment housing, though their openings tend to go fast.
If anyone is looking for temporary summer housing for the Summer Session program, I am a first-year looking to sublet my apt for July and August. It's a studio at 1145 Chapel St for $900/month. It is furnished and includes internet, plus laundry/elevator/key card security in building. The location is literally adjacent to the architecture school, so it is very convenient for late nights in the studio.
Oh rahlly, perhaps we should all meet for tea once we've all settled our divans and damasks in the drawring rooms of our abodes. The help around here is ever so young, but cheap.
I've been admitted to the M.Arch II program at Yale. Wondering whether to look for a studio apartment or a 2 bedroom apartment (and then try and find a roommate). Does anybody here have any suggestions?
ive started doing some searches though Yale's website and also through Elm Properties, Chelsea Company and Pike International. They seem to be pretty good sources thus far. Every Yale alum I've spoken too has said not to live in the grad dorms.
I spoke to a couple of students and they said the same about graduate dorms! I've looked at the websites you've mentioned and most of them seem promising. I'm still quite undecided about roommate vs no-roommate! There are a bunch of nice studio apartments available near the school which seem quite good. That being said, it would be fun to live in a larger apartment with a couple of room mates. Confused. Have you had any luck with roommate searches?
A lot of arch grads live @ 91 Howe, less than 5 min walk from Rudolph Hall. They are mostly studios. I've been here for all three years in New Haven (this is my last). Its fairly spacious and affordable if you'd prefer to live alone, and the landlord - Ralph is really great. My rent this year was $720 not sure how much more it is for new tenants. A lot of friends live at 1175 Chapel (same block as the school) its 1 bedroom apts that can be had for anywhere from 800 - 950 (you gotta haggle).
I'm a soon to be second year at YSOA looking to sublet my apartment in July and August (good for anyone looking for a place to live whilst doing the Summer Program). Its at 65 edgewood - 5 mins walk from school for $600 a month.
Housing for YSOA students
Hello all,
I was just accepted to the M Arch I program at Yale and am almost positive that I'll be going next year.
I am curious as to housing options for grad students. Do people opt for University housing? Or do they find their own apartments? And, if the latter, where are good neighborhoods to look? Also, whats the cost of an average studio/1 bedroom?
Any advice you have would be much appreciated!
