HEY ARCHITECT!!! WHAT SOFTWARE DO YOU USE???

wakiko

I was thinking of what could be a very useful topic for the whole archinecture community and since software can bee both an advantage or a disadvantage i thought of the question above.

So i will start with myself.

- I usually start creating sketches and analysis by hand, using markers and pens (i dont like pencil or charcoal). i save all my sketches and drawings for later.

-Usually my client gives me the points from the topographical survey, so I use CIVIL 3D 2010 to transform the point database into a 3d topographical surface which can be easily worked and analysed.

- after this i start configuring my project on autocad architecture 2010 (PROJECT NAVIGATOR, closest thing to BIM on autocad)In here i develop walls floors ceilings and all that, in accordance to my sketches and site analysis.

-Once i have this I export to vue 6 xstream(havent upgraded to 8 yet) and render my model.(i havent managed to go directly to vue, instead i have to export to sketch up and from sketchup to vue. this because i cant find a way to export from cad directly to vue (3ds or OBJ format, cant find them on cad)

-The final step is to collect plans, sketches, site analysis, renders, and create billboard sort like presentations in PHOTOSHOP CS3.

* Im starting so it's just me doing the whole process, maybe someone will show us how its done on a big architecture studio. Any suggestions or comments or very welcomed and much appreciated.

that's the problem with auto-cad users....

archicad lets me start even the sketching analyzing phase inside the program, hand sketching and conceptual modelling is even easier in here. After that i do the whole project using bim in archicad, even the rendering and animations. Instead of jumping from one program to another....even if i had to, sketchup and artlantis are designed to work with archicad.

Switch to Archicad.
Period.

Revit - from concept to CDs - the cool thing about Revit is the ability to coordinate with consulatants that use Revit Structure and Revit MEP.
the other cool then is the ability to export to 3DS Max to do highly photorealistic renderings if necessary - Revit's variant of Mental Ray is sufficent for most stuff.

I used to use Maya -

Switch to Archicad? sure - when Structural and MEP does

I tried to switch ro revit but i find Autocad Archtiecture much more VERSATILE i believe revit limits you and the way you work....

Rethinkit...
have you heard of autocad mep and autocad civil 3d...theres no autocad structure yet , but being cad based i think the only limit you have is creativity, the only disadvantage is that theyre not BIM. An autodesk will never make autocad bim because that would make revit completely senseless and no one would use it.

sll

you are going way to the extremes, there is no one program that can do everything. From my experience i've seen that some programs simply do things better than another, therefore don't rely on just one.

that's the problem with auto-cad users??! I think that's the problem with archicad users…..they think archicad can do everything including washing underwear. If washing underwear was so simple, why do we need so many god damn washing detergent like Tide or Oxi-clean. After all, at the end they come out clean right? it doesn’t matter which one you use…even if its from the teddy bear’s Downey or yelling guy billy mays oxi-clean. They all claim do the same thing. Except that once in a while, someone soils themselves after eating one of those suicide burritos from Chipotle or Qdoba and pays for it later. Oooh why did you have to order extra guacamole and that mystery green sauce. So those underwear will never be white enough to wear.

I say stick to what you know. If autocad, or revit, or MS paint works for you, then great. If not, then just buy extra pairs of underwears…..preferably black ones.

Sure have - Autocad Mep and autocad civil 3D - I used to work at an MEP firm with Autocad And Autocad MEP - it was very cumbersome to make changes, especially on these big OSHPD hospital projects. Similar project downstairs was in Revit, Structural,MEP, and Architecture - they were able to respond quicker to changes - especially all those that result from an OSPD review.

At Chiplote, I always go for the vege-bowl with Chipolte sauce, quacamole and a Corona to wash it down - it's less of a gut bomb.

you just dont get it because you are blindfolded by ignorance and by autocad.

The difference is not in the detergent you are using, its in washing... you see Myself, using archicad is like machine washing my underwear, when you using your crippled autocad is like hand washing your underwear.

You see i dont give a fying f#KC if i order extra chipotle or that mistery bomb sauce, because i've got archicad which washes off stains in 15 min, while you my friend, have your autocad and probably takes you 5 hours to wash your underwear.

Efficiency my friend that's all i have to say

Take it easy, sll! I wouldn’t want you to wash your underwear again. There is no standard stating what software to use. If some practice wants to use an etch-a-sketch and a lite-brite to model and draft, by all means, let them. At the end of the day, if the project gets built and the contractor can read the information, who cares. The information is read clearly. Isn’t that the end goal? If you have some nice graphics with rainbows, unicorns, and pretty little flowers but the data is difficult to read, then you didn’t do your job right, even with your fancy whirlpool washer with all the gizmos and gadgets that can blast music and make you a cup of cappuccino.

So continue washing your clothes any way you want. I’ll continue to drop my clothes at the laundry mat where they actually have people that washed them for me.

i've just submitted a tender set on a 16 storey office building in which every 1:10 detail is a hand sketch.

with all out clients finding their feet again and pushing to re-start stalled projects we don't have time for time consuming bim models.

i completely agree with ( amouse) when i tried switching to revit i found it so horrible that you have to specify even what the workers are going to have for lunch in order to obtain results. The cd's in revit are a bit clumsy, and hard to work with....i used to work for a small studio, the lead architect tried revit for to years, the problem was that it was so troublesome to program every single bim detail, that he switched back to basic 3d cad. I couldn't believe it, in fact i hated it. I think 3d models are extremely useful. And to SLL, I dont think archicad can deliver hand made sketches that actually look hand made.

"analyzing phase inside the program"

Very limiting surely, what about immeasurable factors of site that one can only respond to intuitively.

I find that I move into using a computer at as late a stage as possible. I want to spend as much time thinking and as little time computing as possible.

Personal preference though.

Best

i have use autocad, archicad, formz, hands, toes, my mojo for the past 20 years but revit trumps them all.

i wish revit was as mature as it is today when i was back in school. it would have helped to understand how to put a building together rather than making pretty pictures.

still rolling it out in Form Zed

everyone tells me Rhino finally built some decent solid modeling tools - guess i should step into the 21st cen....

i still email AutoDesSys occasionally telling them that if they'd just hire a decent graphic designer and UI specialist, they'd have a competitive product - have you seen the form z logo?
