Customizing Line Work

mark lower

just to make it clear this is in the context of 2D vector rending

i want to do a drawing, which involves a process of tracing a drawing by hand, scanning it back into the computer, and doing additional work on it with various medias...

i want the humanistic imperfections of a hand drawing, but i simply do not have the time.

i am wondering if there is a program or file i can load into one that will allow me to draw the line in the computer with the little imperfections of a hand drawing...

(e.g. maybe a customized pen set in AutoCAD or customized line types in Illustrator)

Thank you.

I think RetchUp does it pretty well....

You can always draw something in AutoCAD, and then import it into SketchUp.

Retch up!

You could always use a filter in Illustrator.
We used to joke that michael graves had a special line type for his plotter to get that 'quick sketch look.'

There used to be a sketch plug-in for AutoCAD - not sure if it is still around - a quick google did not reveal it.

PowerCAD on the Mac has a command to make lines sketchy that works very well, though you won't find too many people using that program any more.

2 options I know of are
1-import CAD into sketchup like suggested above- its the best method ive found.
2-if you have AutoCAD 2009 (might even be older-not sure) they added "visual styles" under the tools where you can edit the "jitter" levels and "overhang" levels- which are essentially the same tools sketchup uses to create a hand-drawn look.
