Like many others here, I am working on M.arch applications.
I am curious to see what opinions are here. In the fourth year of my architecture undergrad, I placed in two competitions. One was a second place prize; the other an honorable mention/fourth place. Both were somewhat large competitions; one was an AIAS comp.
Will these awards significantly affect my ability to get into grad schools? Of course, I am working hard on all aspects of the application. The portfolio is looking pretty good. GPA + GRE are ok. Just wondering how much stock I should place in the comps, I guess.
If it matters, I'm applying to some of those brag-worthy schools out East, as well as some state/provincial schools in the Northwest.
well, its certainly not going to hurt... presumedly, if you have two competition placing projects then your portfolio will be pretty good... just be sure to highlight the work in a clearly formatted and easy to read portfolio... don't be afraid of whitespace... as is said on pretty much every grad school thread, you're portfolio will be the key much more so than gpa and gre... so, you should be in pretty good shape... good luck!
Thanks for the feedback. I've put a lot of work into my portfolio so far--and I'm certainly not afraid of white space (perhaps even to a fault). I'm posting it here for anyone to review.
- Still working on this... The next weeks will be focused on it.
- I need to update with some more current professional stuff
- Thinking about leaving out Project 5 (townhouse)
- Minimal text. Good or bad?
-for your professional project you need to describe your role in the project... did you do the design? were you only responsible for the renderings? etc.
-i would include a short description of each project and your concept
-i also personally like to see more process... it often tells me more about you than the finished project.
Thanks for your comments. Helpful to hear a critique.
Ha. The title... Maybe I'll change that. Process is what I will work on documenting more thoroughly. I will add project descriptions/concept and more info on professional stuff.

A few notes:

Extra note:
- Each page will be trimmed from 8.5x11 to 7x11, explaining why the layout might look a bit weird

Dead link now. Maybe I'll post the revised version later.

I'd be interested to see it; repost when the revision is done.
