How do architect approach to competition oversea? No fooling around plz

Gyo

I have always wondered how a starchiitect works their way around when they participate in an international competition. Knowing you worked with one of the top architect Raphael Moneo, which is also my favorite architect, how did Raphael actually do this?

My question is, how do an architect like who you worked with, approach to a site that is out there on a different continent? I doubt they actually fly to the site. Knowing some architect will work with an local architect, but still, things can be really different when you are on the site looking it yourself.

How do you guys approach to competition oversea and actually won the competition. Thanks for sharing^^

some comps require firms to team up with local reps/firms

lots of comps are won by firms that have never visited the site.

We do fly people out. Lead designers and principals would be going there for meetings before getting the team together. I flew myself to Dubai two years ago for meetings etc. There was no site at that time, because it was an artificial island like many other artificial things in the UAE. We are not 'required' to team up with local architects, but how many of us are licensed to practice in other countries, so teaming up with local architects is almost a given and we've had a good firm we worked with before that is doing our project now and now they can actually go visit sites etc. But yes, you are right, it is not the same when you get images and when you are on the site, but we always fly out!
