Have you ever spent some time in the evening or weekend as a junior level arch/la employee illustrating an idea or two without billing your time knowing the project is over budget, just for the sake of 'good' design?
Sometimes I get the feeling the arch/la profession survives/thrives on this. Thoughts?
u'll be doing that for the rest of ur life. the more senior u are the more "free" time you need to spend.
any professional does a share of free work "tinkering"
my sister is in finance and the other sister is a lawyer, they take home work all the time w/o extra pay.
I spent 3 months on a project, only to have the client say "we're just not sure if this is the right time to prusue our project, given the current economic situation," and have spent the past 3 months tracking them down for the fee they owe.
Zen Maker, I feel your pain, having done contract 3d work.
But I found working with small start ups is much more satisfying than established firms. Perhaps it's because they haven't learned how to screw you over yet.
I find when I work with small 1 or 2 people firms, sure the are disorganized and will ask you to make a million changes after it's "done", but they are usually so grateful because there is no way they can do the work, that they will compensate you for the extra hours you put in.
On the other hand, with a larger firm, the guy who gives you the work, the guy who gives you money and the guy who makes the real decisions are in three different places. Good luck even getting an email response.
