GSAPP Intro to Architecture Admissions

lillimbing

Hello,
I am preparing to graduate with a double BA in history and English with honors and a 3.8 GPA in Spring 2010.
That said, it seems I realized a little late that my greatest passion and career goal is Architecture.
While I have limited coursework in art (and none in Architecture, as my school doesn't even have a program), I have well-developed skills in freehand drawing, and some photography experience.

I plan on applying for a Master of Architecture in Fall 2011, but I am hoping to participate in Columbia's Introduction to Architecture program in 2010.

I was wondering, how selective is the Intro to Arch program? Has anyone been rejected and could share their experiences?
For the Intro to Arch application, what should I highlight in my drawing/photography samples (which are suggested to accompany the application)?

I am really banking on getting in, as I hope it will be a great learning experience and way to build my portfolio and get some experience before applying to graduate school.

Any info about the selectivity of the program or tips on improving my application would be greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!

Hi!

i just took the intro to arch program this summer. I was a econ major Graduated in may 2009.

The application process was not strict and the program had approx. 200 students that get split up according to your backgrounds. a bunch of us joked around how we dont think they reject anyone.

with your qualifications i def. think you'll get in. just show them that u have a sincere interest. i remember writing a statement of purpose but don't know if it was required in the application.

i dont remember sending drawing/photography samples. i had no artistic background, neither did my section. the program is a great way to determine whether or not you want to apply to arch. grad school. many of my classmates already had well established careers and were taking the course for the consideration of changing professions. i believe only myself and another classmate acutally are applying to grad school for fall 2010 the rest decided it was a bit too intense.

i highly suggest dorming because the course is very time consuming. most students stay well past 12am to finish work. dorming is also a great way to network with other students.

hope this helps :)

i definitely do not think anyone gets rejected. unless the program fills up. they accept on a rolling basis so try to sign up early. i applied in mid-april and was accepted right away.

i didn't send in a personal statement or a portfolio. i was accepted as soon as my official transcript was sent to the school. don't worry about sending in any of the optional things. the admission process is not as serious as they make it out to be. but the program is definitely serious. do not take light the intensity of the program. be prepared to pull many all nighters, work on many new projects and get critiqued.

its a great experience to know whether or not you want to go to graduate school and to meet some great people.

m2p - how long is 'right away'? are we talking 2-3 weeks or like a couple of days?

I think I was accepted within a few weeks of applying. But The day after my official transcript arrived at the school (updated via the application website), I recieved an email of acceptance. So I think if you send your transcript faster, you may hear back sooner.
