non design backround portfolio

FLmanatee

Hey all

I am applying to MLA 1 programs for 2010

quick facts:
I graduated with a BS in biochemistry from santa clara with a decent GPA (3.3) being a chem major. I am taking the GRE next week, but have spent most of my time putting together this first attempt at a portfolio. My hopes are to get into a program where I can apply some of my science background and pursue sustainable design. I am currently working for a residential design/BUILD landscape and pool company in florida. I emphasize build because there is a lot of fun construction and crazy rock work, very hands-on. http://www.lucaslagoons.com/

anyways would appreciate some feedback, everyone seems very helpful
here is the link to the portfolio draft 1

thanks

I like the progression, from sketches to explorations to projects.

Your intro page needs some work, as the first impression it is very important, consider easing into your work a little bit... a cover, a buffer, a TOC and then your work.

Your titles meander too much, I don't know how familiar you are with inDesign but you should have a 'master' that has a consistent location for your icons, page numbers and text.

I dig your amino acid drawing and biochemistry links, very cool.

I wouldn't go full bleed with that project at the end, it seems like you have more successful images that you could use as a showcase there. The model looks like a study in progress.

Since you have taken the CD program at the GSD, you do have a bit of a design background. Take advantage of that and place one of your most successful images that is related the MLA program and place it at the beginning. This would help me realize that I am not looking at a BFA portfolio with sketches and no LA experience, but a progression that leads to me accepting you.

Good luck!!

thanks for the feedback, i agree i like those charcoal drawings but it does kinda come out of nowhere.

Also two of the schools i am applying to have a 12 page single side only limit for the portfolio so if people could point out what they think works better and what doesn't, it would help me trim down. much appreciated!!!

i would suggest using a grid to layout the pages, there seem to be little graphic design / presentations going into the work at the moment. it can be showcased much better.

i would perhaps cut down on some if the images at the start if you wanted to reduce the length as the later more complex work showcases both your sketching and design skills...2 for 1

like lorem..i like the amino acid drawings..they are quirky show another side to you

my suggestions would be to cut down
2, 5, 6 , 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 16, 17,

if you can condense 18 & 19, 20 & 21. i am not sure how many pages that leaves you with but it could be a good place to start.

hope this helps. good luck.
