Hello,
I wanted to ask for some advice about grad school. I got laid off like many others, and am applying for the m.arch 2. I have a 5 year professional degree. My question is, how do I explain the time that iv’e been laid off? Its been 6 months. I thought about mentioning that I’ve been freelancing, in my personal statement. Any suggestions?
The way you worded that I question if you actually have been freelancing. Whatever you do, don't lie. Just don't be too honest if you've spent the last 6 months doing nothing but living off Unemployment and drinking.
If I was hired as a contracted employee or freelancing, I would list it in my resume as such. I would list the name of the company/person I did work for and what that work was. You might mention it in your personal statement, but only if it relates to something broader and more important about who your are and what you do.
Personally, I think freelancing when you're out of work is something of a good quality in a candidate. It shows that you do not give up, you're resourceful, and passionate about what you do. It's entrepreneurial.
If you didn't freelance and sat around drawing and reading, that's important to your personal growth and you can feel free to mention that in your personal statement. Showcase your interests and activities- getting laid off sucks, but it's what you do with your time that's important.
aquapura u got ur head ur ass. stick to the question, not ur own interpretation of things. u got some nerd frustration stop taking it out through ur keyboard, nerdoe. now go sukadik.
ive been freelancing, just not too excited about the kind of work. thanks to the rest. som eschools ask in the statement to mention what i have been doing since graduation
I don't think aqua meant that in a negative way. It really wasn't clear the way you worded it if you were actually freelancing or thought it would be good to say that to avoid saying you haven't had work. If you have been freelancing great, put it down with references. Even if its not the best work its good to see you were keeping busy and not waking up late drinking beer everyday.
I think aqua's general point was good don't lie about it whatever you do. Take the best parts out of what you have been doing and explain hows that's benefited your development. Also try not to be so negative like in your last response, it won't help you get any advice here or anywhere in life. Best of luck in your application.
grad school and layoffs

Well if you truly were freelancing say you were freelancing. you said it yourself, you like many others were laid off and weren't able to find a job.
If a school is going to hold that against you (which is almost 100% unlikely) is a school you dont want to be at anyway.
The way you worded that I question if you actually have been freelancing. Whatever you do, don't lie. Just don't be too honest if you've spent the last 6 months doing nothing but living off Unemployment and drinking.
ouch Auqa- a little harsh
