We buy all our software either through our tech/workstation/IT consultants or directly from the software company (ie. Adobe). Licenses are a big expense so depending on the staff's skill, workstations gets only a handful of software/upgrades.
There is however no shortages of "sources" for free software... but you run a few legal risks by using them for business.
@ sun shy 3, was your implication "you won't survive in this profession' to do with assuming a lack of photoshop skills or to do with not knowing where to get cheap photoshop. I already know about GIMP but I don't like it. Photoshop full price costs about 500 quid, which I dont feel like paying if I can still get it from my school membership.
Sorry to budge in, but I'm on the lookout for an affordable 3d CAD for use in Furniture/Fixtures/Detailing. Something professional which wouldn't destroy my startup's finances.
Where do you get your software from?
Do you buy it? Where can I get a good deal for your Photoshop and Illustrator.

Adobe CS6 is available on a subscription monthly basis. $19.99/month for one program and something like $40 or $50/month for all the rest.
