Locality / Vernacular in Architecture

Bluesman7

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if anyone had some good examples of Modern practices that are heavily influenced by locality or the vernacular of a certain region.

I have started researching practices like Zumthor, Gigon & Guyer (more for their locality / rarely practicing outside of switzerland) and Miralles and Moneo (Spain) and how the local vernacular might influence their work.

Thanks,
Blues

botta's earlier work.

siza/souto de moura

the work of gigon|guyer is an interesting example. a lot of their details are a little insane, but build on a local typology.

pick up a (used) copy of frampton's critical regionalism.

other architects:

jim cutler (earlier)
mockbee
murcutt
chuck correa
gion caminada

to some extent, the rammed earth work of rick joy could be considered neo-vernacular-ish.

a lot of work going on in graubuenden and vorarlberg is a modern variant of a vernacular typology. highly energy efficient, as well.

What about Chicago architects that design skyscrapers? Is that vernacular to Chicago? or NYC for that matter.

I can't see how Miralles was influenced by Catalan vernacular architecture at all... I think he was more influenced by specific, certainly old, individuals like Gaudí or Jujol, but that's not exactly vernacular -vernacular as anonymous works that form the urban grids-
