take unrelated interim p/t job?

orangechair

the dilemma:

I'm an unemployed may m.arch graduate. I have a pretty strong chance at getting a p/t job with an SAT prep company, but I've noticed job postings for architecture are picking up, slowly, but a little. Do I go for the p/t job now and suck it up if I get real work before it runs out, or do I hold out for a job in the field I actually trained for?

get whatever you can right now. even though postings are up a bit, we're a long way off from being anywhere near capacity. which simply means you may have 1-200 applicants for every opening.

presumably you could always leave the p/t job if you were able to land something in an arch firm, no?

Take the job and quit if you land a better gig. An SAT prep company should be able to find a qualified replacement if necessary.

I was in a similar situation (though I've since decided to leave architecture). SAT prep is a great part time job...however, most of the time the company will expect you to stick with a student until he/she finishes the program. Since you would usually meet with students in the evenings or over the weekend, it's not unreasonable to keep looking for a job in architecture even while you're tutoring. If necessary, you'd be able to overlap both jobs for a while as you phase out your students.

Live off very wealthy people, get drunk all the time and post on archinect all the time.

Wait... that's what I do.

i'm also a may m.arch grad. i just took an interim ft job at my undergrad scohol-it's supposed to be temporary, though i can see it going on for a while. although it doesn't give me a lot of time to look for work (since i have a 75m commute, give or take, each way) it does make me feel a lot better about myself. and it sort of pays the bills, at least until i have to start paying back my loans.
