Flowing water feature?

fhwong

I need to design a cool modern running water feature.

A friend of mine is into Feng Shui and needs one in the entrance to his office.

Anyone got any cool examples? Everytime I search on the internet all I find are ugly fountains.

Looking for something modern, slick but not over bearing.

Thanks

fhwong, you'll probably need to provide more ideas before you get an response. Is the system to be self contained with a circulation pump? You can do something along the lines of running a vertical pipe(s) up that allows water to run down a surface of concrete, stone etc. Be sure to provide a large enough base, if the water has too much of a vertical drop it will tend splash out a lot, which canbe either a nuisance or even a safety hazard.

We had a client that wanted something similar inside their residence near their entry.

The idea was ditched because of the increased humidity levels it would cause and the cost associated with dealing with said humidity.

As an alternative, you can reccomend a fish tank. A fish tank has the benefit of using readily available (read cheaper) products. A good aquarium shop will help you select an attractice aquarium and the various equipment to get it running. It does require regular attention and maintenance, but I imagine so would the water feature.

Apparently a fish tank is not viable as the water is not free flowing.

The water needs to flow.

In response to your first post I have no idea how I want it to work.

I would like to see some examples first before I decide how it would function.

Toying with the idea of water running across glass ... or I have seen some where water runs down some nylon wires hanging from the ceiling.

Just trying to guage what is out there that is interesting. All the ones I have seen seem a little lame.

The concept is pretty straightforward then, you just need some sort of basin to collect the water, a power source, a circulation pump to move the water and some material for the water to flow down. What do you like, What would fit the space, what does the client like? It seems like something that should be custom built. A mock up version might be worthwhile.

I saw alot of these water features in Scandinavia where they'd create this raised stone channel that water flowed down, and it was interrupted at points by these massive marble spheres that just floated within these little bowled points. I presume it worked due to surface tension or something of that nature, but the spheres would rotate around and round, just from this small trickle of water.

jk3, there's one in new mexico or arizona some place (national park, I think) that the sphere is something like 5 tons (about 6 feet in diameter) and you could spin it with little to no force.

Scarpa's Brion cemetery does some interesting things with light and water.
