University of Melbourne MArch

antipodean

Just a quick question:

Have any forum members had any experience with the University of Melbourne's architecture programme? I am considering applying to the three-year MArch I once I finish my PhD. Though Melbourne ranks very well in the global rankings (haven't checked the Chinese rankings, but it does very well in the THES and US News and World global rankings), I am aware that the regard in which architecture programs are held are often entirely unrelated to the overall rankings and as such I am unsure as to how I should proceed.

How well is Melbourne considered when compared to international architecture schools? As I expressed in another thread (http://www.archinect.com/forum/threads.php?id=92015_0_42_0_C), tuition at Melbourne is extraordinarily inexpensive for Australian citizens, but I am unsure that the difference in perceived quality is smaller than the difference in tuition (approx. 8 000 AUD per annum deferred to an interest-free loan vs. nearly 65 000 AUD per annum). If anyone could offer any insight, that would be great.

Much appreciated.

To clarify: that 65 000 AUD per annum figure is based upon the tuition costs for the GSD.

I would be paying Domestic student fees at Melbourne. Approximately 8 000 AUD. The larger figure would be for a US school.

hold up! Antipodean, this is funny.

I have applied for M.arch at U.Mel 2 years ago as a local student (I am NZ citizen). And they charged me around AUD$20000! Since I could not afford it, I had to give up the degree and carried on at the University of Auckland. And still they charge AUD$24,900!!

And.. you pay $8000???

NZ citizens are not eligible for CSP places.

Went there and worked there. There is a lot of change going on right now. Good change. A lot of interesting studios and overseas studios. New dean and a lot of new teachers. Plus a new building on the way.

I liked it at least.

Personal endorsements are always good. What overseas studios in particular?

Also, do you know if there is an online resource outlining said changes? I was unable to find anything of that nature on the Melbourne website.

There are a bunch of overseas studies over the next few semesters. last year to genoa, italy and nanjing china. coming up to columbia and chile plus I am sure there are more I just can't remember.

the changes are due to the new dean, Tom Kvan, who came from Hong Kong uni. They are bringing in more local and outside melbourne architects to teach studios and introducing more digital aspects into the teaching with a better fablab and such. basically just introducing more emerging ideas.

That sounds quite promising. I need to finish my PhD first, so due to various time constraints, I won't be able to start any sooner than 2012/2013. It'll be interesting to see how to program further develops.
