Ramp landings

GerGgy

Hi all,

Quick question, for wheelchair ramps I understand the maximum is 1:12, now how long of a run can the ramp go before I need a landing? For the longest time I thought it followed the stairs where if they were taller than 12 feet than you would need a landing but that doesn't seem right for ramps.

Thanks.

30 feet.

in length not in height....

the question went to length...

right... i figured that... just wanted to make sure the OP knew

might be wrong about this, but technically I think it's one landing per 30" of rise, which would allow you to have a longer run than 30' if your ramp was shallower than 1:12 (not too common I suppose).

then it's not technically a ramp.

but a sloped surface.

slopes steeper than 1:20 still require landings and railings, I believe.

not per 1010.2 which describes max ramp slopes - as part of means of egress. remember section 1010 pertains to ramps as a component of a means of egress. 1010.8 describes when handrails are needed - rise greater than 6", but again that is when the component is defined as part of a means of egress. i am sure there are other codes, depending on the state, but this is from IBC 2006...

Alright cool, thanks guys. I'll see if my professor will accept these measurements.

Are you guys even architects? haven't you heard of code references? You wouldn't be working for me long if I found out you were hanging out here looking for answers for these kinds of questions

xexe....few years back, but maybe I should start putting "j/k" on every joke from now on for some people.

Does he need a ramp?

Hey, how about that ramp for Knowlton Hall at OSU by Mack Scogin Merril Elam Architects?

It's a school project by the way, so referencing codes would really make some professors REALLY happy....depends on what school!

poop, perhaps i should do the same.

i'm guessing he needs a ramp, because he referred to wheelchairs, but if it's not an egress component, and more of an aesthetic decision, you might be able to argue, that since it's not "used as a component of a means of egress," a steeper slope will suffice.

exactly, I was just trying to get some answers, why he needs etc. etc. I mean you can always use a chair lift, right hehe. I'd love to see that ramp go up 4 stories...now that would be fun to do!

it sounds like a first year question gergy's asking...

Actually, as I remember that was one of my first project too, stairs and ramps to the second floor!
